Defined Curls
Springy · full volume
Defined curls are your own curl pattern with the frizz translated back into shape — clumped, springy, glossy spirals with real volume. It's less a style than a technique stack: the right cut, wet styling, and a product cast make the same head of hair behave completely differently.

Who it suits
Anyone with wave to coil — 2c through 4c — can get more definition; only the method changes with the pattern. The volume beautifully balances long and heart-shaped faces and softens square angles. Round faces do best keeping some length, with volume steered toward the crown rather than the sides.
Wash-day styling takes 20-40 minutes — leave-in, gel, diffuse or air-dry — then refreshes carry you between washes. Cut-wise, a dry curl shape every 10-12 weeks.
Defined Curls — common questions
How do I define my curls without frizz?
Style them soaking wet — that's the step most people skip. Rake in leave-in, then gel, scrunch, and don't touch the hair while it dries. The gel forms a crisp cast; once fully dry, scrunch the cast out with a drop of oil, and the frizz stays sealed inside the clumps.
Why are my curls defined when wet but frizzy when dry?
Moisture is escaping mid-dry and the clumps are breaking apart — usually from touching, rough towels, or too little product. Swap the towel for a microfiber wrap or T-shirt, increase the gel, and diffuse on low or air-dry hands-off.
How often should curly hair be cut?
Every 10-12 weeks for shape, sooner if the ends knot or curls stop clumping at the tips. Always by someone who cuts curls dry — wet-cut curls shrink into surprises.
