Hollywood waves are deep, uniform S-curves set close to the head and brushed into one glossy sheet, usually over one shoulder. Born in the 1930s and still the red-carpet default, they're a set rather than a cut — built with an iron or pin curls, then brushed out and controlled.
Who it suits
The S-waves break up length on an oblong face and soften a square jaw, and a deep side part adds asymmetry that flatters round faces too. You need at least shoulder-length hair in good condition; straight to wavy textures set most easily. Very tight curls need smoothing first, which adds real time.
An occasion set: 30-45 minutes with an iron, sectioning clips, and a brush-out, and it lasts an evening — a day or two with care. Nothing to trim, everything to style.

Direction and finish. Curls are individual spirals; Hollywood waves are one continuous S-pattern — every section curled the same way, then brushed into a single ribbon and smoothed with pomade. The brush-out is what turns curls into waves.

A well-set head lasts the evening easily and often into the next day — pin curls or a roller set outlast a quick iron job. Humidity is the enemy; a firm-hold spray and sleeping in a loose silk wrap stretch the life.
