The side part is a scissor cut with tapered sides and two to four inches on top, combed to one side along your natural part. A hard part, a thin razor line at the parting, is optional and makes it read sharper. This is the default haircut of the last hundred years.
Who it suits
The diagonal line of the part breaks up symmetry, which flatters round and square faces, and the modest height suits nearly everyone. Straight and wavy hair parts cleanly; tight curls resist a defined line unless cut short. Strong cowlicks at the crown decide which side you part on, so work with them.
Trims every three to four weeks keep the taper and part line clean. Daily styling is a minute with a comb and a light pomade or cream.

How do I find my natural part?
Comb your hair straight back when wet, then push it gently forward with your palm. It will fall and split where the crown cowlick points. Parting with that direction keeps the hair lying flat all day; fighting the cowlick means product and touch-ups forever.
What is a hard part?
A thin line shaved into the parting with a trimmer or razor, so the part stays visible even when the hair moves. It sharpens the whole cut but needs re-shaving every couple of weeks. Skip it if you like changing your part or letting the cut grow out quietly.
