An afro taper leaves the natural coils full on top, anywhere from one to several inches, shaped rounded or slightly squared, and fades just the temples and nape. The sides between stay fuller than a regular fade, so the afro keeps its silhouette while the edges stay sharp.
Who it suits
The height flatters round faces, and a slightly squared shape-up frames oval and square ones well. It obviously wants coily hair with the density to hold a shape. If your hairline is uneven, the lineup can be cut to follow it; tell the barber rather than letting them square off thin corners.
A shape-up every two to three weeks keeps the taper and lineup crisp. Daily upkeep is a leave-in or light oil and a pick to lift flat spots, plus a durag or bonnet at night.

What's the difference between an afro taper and a taper fade?
The faded zones are the same, temples and nape, but the afro taper keeps far more length everywhere else so the natural coil shape stays intact. A regular taper fade takes the whole side short. One is a trim around an afro; the other is a short haircut.
How do you maintain an afro taper between cuts?
Moisture and shape. Use a leave-in conditioner or light oil daily, pick the hair outward to fill flat spots from sleeping, and cover it at night with a durag or bonnet to cut friction. The faded edges will blur after two weeks or so no matter what; that part is the barber's job.
